I.    SCOPE

      This policy establishes the criteria for awarding University Honors upon graduation.

II.   POLICY

      The University awards University Honors at graduation in recognition of outstanding

      academic achievement.  In order to qualify for University Honors, a student must

      complete at least 60 letter-graded credits at the University of Pittsburgh.  All Career-

      related course work completed at the University must be included in the calculation of

      the Grade Point Average (GPA).

      Honors are based on the following GPAs at graduation:

                  Summa Cum Laude                3.75
                  Magna Cum Laude                  3.50
                  Cum Laude                              3.25

      Each school may award undergraduate Program Honors based on the requirement-

      specific GPA and other criteria, as determined by the school and department.

      Graduate honors are awarded only in the First Professional Programs of the Schools

      of Law, Medicine, and Pharmacy, utilizing class rank and other criteria as determined

      by the school.  The following designations are associated with those schools:

            Law - J.D.                            Medicine - M.D.                 Pharmacy - Pharm.D.
