                  On-line Circulation System
EFFECTIVE DATE:   September 10, 1990



I.      PURPOSE

        To outline the University of Pittsburgh Libraries circulation
        processes, including borrowing, renewals, returns, and
        recalls.

II.     SCOPE

        This procedure is applicable to all University Library System
        (ULS) libraries and Non-ULS Libraries that have implemented
        the NOTIS integrated on-line circulation system, which
        include:

        ULS Libraries  Graduate School of Business, Chemistry and
        Computer Science, East Asian, Economics, Engineering, Fine
        Arts, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs,
        Hillman, Langley, Mathematics, Music, Physics, and School of
        Library and Information Science libraries.

        Non-ULS Libraries  Falk, Law, Nursing, WPIC, and the regional
        campus library at Johnstown.


III.    PROCEDURE

        Responsibility     Action

        A.  Borrowing

            Patron        1.  Obtain the desired materials by
                              presenting a valid University of
                              Pittsburgh Identification (ID) Card or
                              Special Library Card.

                              a.   ULS Library

                              See Exhibit A, University Library System
                              Borrowing and Fee Schedule, for loan
                              periods and maximum number of books.

                              b.   Non-ULS Library

                              Refer to the circulation policy posted
                              in each library for the borrowing
                              period and maximum number of items
                              permitted for borrowing.

        B.  Renewals

            Patron        1.  Renew all materials at the appropriate
                              library.

                              a.   ULS Libraries

                              Materials can be renewed by telephone by
                              providing the borrower's ID number and
                              book ID (barcode number) for each item
                              to be renewed.  See Exhibit A,
                              University Library System Borrowing and
                              Fee Schedule, for renewal limits.

                              b.   Non-ULS Libraries

                              Refer to the circulation policy posted
                              in each library renewal points other
                              than the lending library and for
                              telephone renewal policy.

        C.  Returns

            Patron        1.  Return materials at the appropriate
                              library.

                              a.   ULS Libraries

                              Books may be returned at any ULS
                              Library.

                              b.   Non-ULS Libraries

                              Refer to circulation policy posit in
                              each library for acceptable return
                              points other than the lending library.

            Library       2.  Provide a receipt, if requested.

        D.  Recalls

            Library       1.  Notify the patron that the charged
                              material is being recalled due to:

                              a.   Material required for course
                                reserve

                              b.   Material charged out for more than
                                seven days is requested by another
                                patron

            Patron        2.  Return the recalled materials
                              immediately upon receipt of recall
                              notification.

        E.  Assessment of Library Fines or Fees

            Library       1.  Assess library fees or fines in
                              accordance with the following:

                              a.   ULS Libraries

                              See Exhibit A, University Library System
                              Borrowing and Fee Schedule for
                              appropriate amount(s).

                              b.   Non-ULS Libraries

                              Refer to the circulation policy posted
                              in each library for appropriate
                              amount(s).

            Patron        2.  Remit payment for the assessed fee or
                              fine.

        F.  Lost Books

            Library       1.  Assess the charges for the replacement
                              of lost materials together with the
                              processing fee(s) in accordance with
                              the following:

                              a.   ULS Libraries

                              See Exhibit A, University Library System
                              Borrowing and Fee Schedule.

                              b.   Non-ULS Libraries

                              Refer to the circulation policy posted
                              in each library.

            Patron        2.  Reimburse the library for the lost
                              materials and remit any processing fees
                              that are required.
